How TLS/SSL certificates protect websites and APIs
TLS/SSL certificates from SSL.com secure the connection between your server and every visitor, encrypting data in transit, authenticating your website’s identity, and satisfying browser trust requirements. Seven certificate products cover every use case, with durations now capped at 200 days and ACME automation available.
A TLS/SSL certificate does two things. It encrypts the connection between your server and your visitors’ browsers, protecting passwords, payment data, and personal information from interception. It also authenticates your website’s identity so visitors and browsers know they are connected to the real, legitimate server.
Without a valid TLS/SSL certificate, modern browsers display security warnings and block access. With one, your site shows the padlock icon, your traffic is encrypted, and your organization can optionally have its identity verified (OV) or prominently displayed (EV).

Certificate lifetime & automation
Important: Effective March 11, 2026, maximum TLS/SSL certificate lifetimes are 200 days. Apple has proposed further reductions toward 47 days. This means more frequent renewals, outage risk at scale, and ACME-based automation is the recommended approach for any team managing more than a handful of certificates.
SSL.com supports ACME (RFC 8555): certificates can be issued, renewed, and revoked automatically. See the ACME capability page for full details.
